Waqrapukara Trek, meaning Horn Fortress In Quechua, is in reference to the massive and powerful rock formations of this Peru site. This magnificent archaeological site is located in the southern province of Cusco. Built upon a mountain, Waqrapukara full day offers views of what seems as endless mountains that span so far they disappear into the horizon.

It is believed that this powerful archaeological site was at one point used for astronomical observation and ritual, as well as, the development of agriculture as the buildings are westward facing. Within the stone structures, you will also see vaulted niches with three jambs, a rare detail only found in Mauka Llaqtta architecture in the mythical Paqarektampu.

This full day tour in  Waqrapukara will bring you through various ecological levels including: Quechua, Suni, and Puna. Through each one we will see the beautiful diversity in flora and fauna.

Itinerary

Our Waqrapukara Trek is a remote group or private hike where you can enjoy horseback riding, white water rafting (or canoeing), hiking and camping trek along with spectacular sceneries to the Apurimac Canyon 3 hours SE of Cusco. Without any tourists nearby you will see more amazing Inca ruins built into natural rock formations, overlooking a canyon at the archaeological complex of Huacrapucara. This tour is a tranquil ecological and cultural adventure for those looking to go beyond the average tourist experience and see more of the Region of Cusco, its rich history, people and small towns amidst magnificent landscapes.

Cusco –  Cusipata –Acomayo – Santa Lucia – Waqrapukara – Cusco.

This trip starts picking-you-up from your accommodation at five in the morning. Then we’ll go towards Cusipata town, place where we’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast. We’ll continue by car arriving to santa Lucia town. During the journey we are going to visit “The Pomacanchi Lagoon”, the biggest lagoon of “the four lagoons circuit” included in the popular tour to the inca bridge of qeswachaka.

We start the walk roughly from 4000 meters above sea level towards the archeological site of waqrapukara by a flat road, enjoying magic landscapes surrounded by mountains also watching some animals like alpacas and vicugnas running for free. After walking for about two hours we finally get to waqrapukara.

For his very special location this place was considered as an astronomical viewpoint, and many Chroniclers thought that it was an important pilgrimage sanctuary. After spending time in waqrapukara we continue the trip to santa Lucia village, where our private transport will be waiting for us. We’ll have lunch in Cusipata town. The journey ends in Cusco city at six in the afteenoon

Briefing or Informative Meeting

All information meetings and briefings are held in our main office in Cusco (or your hotel) at 5:00 pm, one night before the tour begins. These meetings last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. If you’re unable to attend, you must coordinate another time by email, by phone or at the Ausangate Trekking office.

Can I store my luggage at your office?

Of course! During the trip, your main luggage can be stored at our office (you can organize it with us on the briefing day or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge.

Any equipment that you won’t need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Don’t leave items of value with your bags; put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (in the unlikely case of theft, many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing everything). It’s best to put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.

Pick up of guests

Ausangate Trekking can pick you up from your hotel, as long as it’s in the Historical Center of Cusco. Your guide will coordinate the pickup time in the briefing session, but please keep in mind that the time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic.

Cusco is an old city, meaning it has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs may be located on streets without access to cars or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. We strongly recommend that you book accommodation with good access.

Group Tours

Group tours are made up of different types of people, then physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route.

It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, the guide will be the one who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if such modifications are possible.

Strikes and demonstrations

Strikes and demonstrations are usually common in Peru, and this may interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked, and train tracks can be taken over. However, we will try to keep your trip as originally planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date. Under these circumstances, tours may also be canceled. In case of changes or cancellations, everything will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our highest priority, and our decisions will be made to protect it.

Lost objects

Please pay attention to where you leave your things and remember to take everything once you leave our transport or restaurant. You’re the only one responsible for your objects during the tour.
